Description
Although there have been many researches on evaluating school district boundaries, special techniques such as programming or statistical methods can be useful in such decision making tasks. However, the development of GIS applications and circulation of digital data make it easy to calculate optimal theoretical school district boundaries. The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for evaluating school district boundaries using the existing GIS applications and data.
First, the theoretical school districts were derived using voronoi division on the network of roads. The difference between the number of school children in each actual school district and theoretical school district was calculated.
The results of analysis showed that these differences were large in the school districts where the children population showed an increasing trend till 1980 but a decreasing or stable trend afterwards. Moreover, use of theoretical school district boundaries shortened the distance between home and elementary school.
The above work showed that the school districts were not modified by the children's population trend. The proposed method made it possible to consider the differences of the children population or the route to school between actual school districts and theoretical school districts for demarcating elementary school district boundaries.
