Abstract

The safety of forestry operations using hydraulic excavators as forest prime movers was investigated by questionnaire survey. The installation rate of operator's cab guards was very high (95.3%). However, only 21.3% of cab guards can protect the entire operator's cab, therefore, most of the cab guards were considered insufficient to prevent accidents by falling objects. Secondly, data on 324 near-accidents in the operator's cab and 553 incidents of damage to whole machine bodies were collected, and the relation between parts of the machine body frequently struck and other factors such as objects involved in collisions was analyzed. In near-accidents, there were many cases of wood hitting front windows, left pillars, and left lower angles during operations. In addition, there were cases of the right front side of the body being hit by wood during operations, the rear of the body hitting remaining trees, cutting ground, and so on among all cases of damage to machines. To enhance operational safety when using this type of forestry machine, it is recommended to protect specific parts of the machine body that are likely to be struck, and to install extended operator's cab guards which provide more extensive protection on the left side of the cabin than current guards.
