Abstract

In South Korea, the National Institute of Korean History collects and compiles historical materials, or archives, as well as carries out research in Korean history. It also practically manages the Korean History On-line which is a cross-retrieval system on historical materials held by thirteen history-related organizations in South Korea. The materials are well organized and stored in this system, which serves various retrieving functions. Specialists of library and information science have participated in development of the system. By contrast, in Japan, information (retrieval) systems for a specific field tend to be developed by specialists within the field together with computer specialists. As a result, there are not many satisfying information systems like Korean History On-line. In the hereafter, more specialists in library and information science and its related field are desired to participate in developing such systems in Japan as well.
