In order to obtain knowledge concerning improvement of universities' patents, we analyzed the number of compounds that corresponded to the claim (hereinafter referred to as “COMPOUNDS”) in universities' medical patents and the correspondence papers.
The average number of COMPOUNDS in substance patents is 10.8 and that in medical use patents is 4.0. The results of patent analysis are i) the joint applications have more COMPOUNDS than sole applications, ii) patent applications subject to Article 30 have less COMPOUNDS iii) patent applications claiming priority have more COMPOUNDS.
From analysis of papers, we found that i) in two-thirds of papers corresponding to substance patents, COMPOUNDS were added, ii) the number of COMPOUNDS in papers correlated poorly with IF (impact factor) and the times the paper was cited.
Our results suggested that the number of COMPOUNDS is influenced by the quality of collaborative research. So, it is important that the situation of collaborative research is improved by smooth communication to build up trust and by adjustment of each contribution with consideration of academic meaning between researchers or between enterprise and university. For quality enforcement of universities' patent applications, it is also important to improve the management of patents and publications in order to avoid application subject to Article 30 and add embodiment based on claiming priority.
