Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how pregnant women choose medical facilities when specialization in departments of obstetrics and gynecology (OBGY) is conducted in the Sennan area of Osaka prefecture. The specialization was put in operation with two public hospitals dividing their roles. One (i.e., Rinku General Medical Center) specialized in obstetrics and the other (i.e., Kaizuka City Hospital) became responsible for gynecology. A mail survey was conducted among women who delivered at Kaizuka City Hospital during 2003-2007. The respondents were asked to answer an open question (i.e., which medical facility they would choose after the specialization is conducted?), a number of hypothetical choice experiment questions for eliciting their preferences on maternity institutions and their socioeconomic characteristics.<br>The results from the open question indicated that 43% of the respondents chose Rinku General Medical Center, while 13% of the respondents chose a private clinic that was unrelated to the specialization. In addition, the results from the hypothetical choice experiment suggest that women who are with relatively smaller families and regard medical enhancement and cost as the most important matter, tend to choose Rinku General Medical Hospital. In contrast, women who are with relatively larger families and attach greater importance to shortening the time needed for traveling and waiting, are likely to select a private clinic.
