Description

Juvenile (aggressive) ossifying fibroma is a benign tumor with active proliferative ability. We describe a case of juvenile (aggressive) ossifying fibroma arising in the mandible of a 6-year-old boy, who was referred to our clinic in 1999 because of a swelling of the mandible. Radiographic examination revealed calcifying tissue-like radiopacities within the tumorous region. The tumor had a relatively distinct border and measured 38×28mm. It was diagnosed to be a benign tumor of the mandible and removed surgically. Histopathological examination showed an ossifying fibroma consisted of fibrous tissue and various sizes of woven bone. After 3 years of surgical treatment, no evidence of recurrence or developmental disability of the mandible has been observed.
