Abstract

The National Rural Development Committee of Thailand has been conducting regular village surveys covering about 60, 000 villages in rural areas across the country. The first trial survey was conducted in 1982, and the survey was expanded to the whole kingdom in 1986. Since the 1986 survey, the results have been input into a village database, which is available for distribution. The survey covers many topics related to the socio-economic situation such as the infrastructure, the production environment, education, hygiene and so on. I have been developing a Northeast Thailand Village Information System (NETVIS) with a view to using the village database to identify the transformation of rural areas of Northeast Thailand. If detailed information on national geographic coordinates, climatic data, and soil data can be incorporated, I believe that the NETVIS can be developed into an integrated system.
