Abstract
This paper proposes a decision-making support system for child care facilities using GIS. In this system, first, a user fixes parameters concerning the behavior of working mothers, that is, their trips to office. Child care facilities are treated as intermediate points on their trips. Next, the user chooses an improved plan for child care facilities, and the system evaluates the plan on three viewpoints. If the result is not satisfactory, the user chooses another alternative. Such a choice-evaluation process can be repeated interactively with ease because of a user-friendly graphical interface. Through the repetition of this process, a policy maker approaches the best alternative. In addition to this function, the system suggests a desirable location of a new facility. This helps the user to reach a better alternative. In the empirical study in Setagaya, several plans for an improvement of child care facilities are evaluated and compared.
