Abstract

Recently, the demand for honey has increased because of its high nutritional content, such as minerals and amino acids. It has also received attention because of its applications in medicine and is used to treat wounds in some medical institutions. Several purity assessment methods have been established to ensure the quality of honey and to further determine harvest regions and varieties of honey. In order to improve the accuracy of distinction, we investigated whether it was possible to determine the harvest year of honey among those from the same region and the same nectar-producing plants, which was unprecedented in the analysis of honey, using multivariate analysis (discriminant function analysis) of the trace elements in all reported varieties of honey. Our results demonstrated that it was possible to determine, with 100% accuracy, the harvest year of Chinese milk vetch honey and citrus flower honey from the harvest years 2009, 2010, and 2011. The results showed a 78.3% accuracy rate when categorizing acacia honey harvested in Hokkaido and a 76.7% accuracy rate when categorizing honey harvested in Akita Prefecture.
