The purpose of this study is to explain how two properties of apparel-physical and aesthetic-are related. For this purpose, both objective and subjective aspects of blouse fabrics were measured: mechanical properties and design images. The relation between the two was also examined. Thirty-six types of white fabric were used as samples to prevent colors and patterns from affecting the results. The subjects of the visual examination (visual ratings through SD method) were 22 experts.
The results were as follows:
1. Imagery items such as elegant/sporty, adult/young and feminine/mannish were highly related to mechanical characteristics such as bending, shearing, and compression.
2. Two factors of images-elegance and decorativeness-were highly related to mechanical characteristics, while the fashionability had no meaningful relation to mechanical characteristics.
3. Many mechanical characteristics showed high contribution ratios to images, with their multiple correlation coefficients ranging from 0.5 to 0.6. But these values are smaller than the ones observed between texture and mechanical characteristics (0.6-0.9)
4. Image of blouse fabrics were classified into 4 clusters by cluster analysis.
5. A review of each cluster and mechanical characteristics indicated that images were deeply related to the characteristics such as bending and shearing.
