Abstract

In the present article, we propose a new definition of personality from the standpoint of behavior analysis, and review some empirical studies. Through conceptual analysis, "personality" was defined as the total behavioral repertoire of a particular individual, and "personality trait", as a class of respondents and/or operants that are controlled by common, stable variables within an individual. The empirical studies we reviewed showed that "personality" could be studied behaviorally as individual differences in sensitivity to certain reinforcement schedules, but the studies were unable to identify variables controlling such individual differences. The present authors argue for the importance of identifying those controlling variables, and provide an example of conceptual analysis for finding the main controlling variable of 2 widely used personality inventories, NEO-PI-R and TCI.
