Abstract

The forward and backward extraction rates of lanthanum by D2EHPA were measured using an industrial-grade organic solvent, SHELLSOL-K, by means of a stirred transfer cell. The forward extraction rate was proportional to the lanthanum concentration and the third power of the extractant concentration in the organic phase, and inversely proportional to the third power of the hydrogen ion concentration. The backward extraction rate was proportional to the lanthanum concentration in the organic phase. The overall extraction rate could be correlated by an equation where the inner-sphere complex formation reaction was considered to be rate-controlling. The mass action equilibrium constant obtained in the present kinetic study agreed well with the extraction constant obtained in the previous equilibrium study by the authors. The effect of adsorption of surfactant at the interface was also investigated. The forward and backward extraction rates were found to be retarded by the addition of a surfactant, Span80, in the organic phase.
