Turblent flow in a rectangular groove faced with a moving plate was analyzed numerically based on the mixing-length theory. The numerical results for the flow were applied to the pressure-smoothed model, to evaluate the evacuation characteristics at high back-pressures of a screw-grooved axial flow pump. The results are compared with the experimental results. Evacuation performance is found to be improved when operation is at high back-pressures. This is attributed to the entry of gas flow in the groove into the turblent regime. Evacuation performance is also found to be greater for a heavier gas rather than a lighter one, as well as when operation is at low back-pressure. Relations of attainable pressure difference against back-pressure at a given rotational speed of the rotor are explained well by the smoothed pressure model.
