Description

Several methods have been proposed to determine the values of design margin so as to compensate for the effect of uncertain parameters in a process system. They rely heavily on numerical computation and are not useful in deepening essential understanding of the design margin. The method proposed in this paper centers on a problem with the Linear Programm ng (LP) form of determlning design margin based on the concept of sensitivity analysis introduced by Takamatsu et al. The problem is solved by applying an analytical solution method for the LP problem which makes possible essential understanding of the solution space for the problem. The solution method developed here is original and quite general. To illustrate the validity of the proposed method, a reactor-separator system with recycling is taken as an example and analysed. The analysis of optimal solution space derived by the solution method makes possible the following three presentations which cannot be obtained by a numerical approach: (1) infeasible combination of basic variables, (2) combination of variables which cannot be optimal and (3) optimal allocation and condition of design margin to reactor and separator.
