Studies were conducted on the equilibrium and kinetics for the extraction of gallium from aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions by PC - 88A (2- ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono - 2 - ethylhexyl ester) in n-heptane as the diluent. It was found that the extractable species in n - heptane is GaR3. 2HR and the equilibrium constant Kex is 2.0 (mol/m3) 0.5. Initial rates of extraction and stripping for the PC88A - Ga system were determined with a stirred transfer cell, and the rate data were correlated as a function of the concentrations of relevant species. The concentration dependencies of both the initial rates satisfy the assumption that a reaction between Ga3+ and the ionic extractant species adsorbed at the liquid - liquid interface is likely to be the rate -controlling step.
