Description

The coincidence effect on the observed particle count in a light-scattering particle counter are studied theoretically. A simple method of coincidence count correction, where the sample aerosol is diluted with particle-free air at constant ratio, is proposed. Expressions for the probability of generating i th-let pulse in coincidence with j particles are derived by applying the Poisson distribution exactly. The variation of particle size distribution after coincidence is calculated, as the aerosols were polydispersed in the log-normal size distribution, on the basis of the theoretical relation between particle size and pulse height for the 60° sideways light-scattering particle counter. The variations of the geometric mean diameter and geometric standard deviation are shown in relation to the average number of particles existing in the sensing volume of the counter.
