Effects of MLSS concentration, (MLSS) o, and measuring cylinder dimensions on SV30 and SVI were studied through activated sludge treatment experiments using synthetic waste water.<BR>It was shown that the interface sedimentation velocity, dx/dt, was expressed as the function dx/dt=k/ (MLSS) 2.4, where k was the interface sedimentation velocity coefficient and (MLSS) was MLSS concentration under the interface in a measuring cylinder, and also that the settling characteristics of the activated sludge could be evaluated by SVI values in the small range of (MLSS) o, because SVI values were dependent on (MLSS) o and water depth in a measuring cylinder, h.<BR>Therefore, it was shown that the settling characteristics of activated sludge could be evaluated by k values which were independent of (MLSS) o and h, and representing more truly the settling characteristics of activated sludge on the basis of microscopic observation rather than SVI values.
