Abstract

Particle size distributions (PSD) of alumina slurry with high volume fractions were measured by Ultrasonic Attenuation Spectroscopy (UAS). When the volume fraction was smaller than 20vol% the median diameters measured by the UAS agreed with those of the conventional methods (Laser diffraction and Photo-centrifuge) within an error of 15% for all the studied cases, however, they differed from the results with the conventional methods at volume fractions higher than 20%. Detailed theoretical considerations on the ultrasonic energy losses due to four major mechanisms, namely, viscous, thermal, scattering and intrinsic losses in UAS indicated that these four mechanisms are not sufficient to describe the attenuation spectrum at volume fraction over 20%, suggesting the nccessity of introducing other factors for ultrasonic attenuation.
