Abstract
Stereo display is one of the key technologies of Virtual Reality(VR), and is a basic requirement of a VR system. VR is a kind of hi-tech in Computer Science, which combines the most preeminent new results of several technologies such as CG, multimedia, display and computer simulation technology. This paper researches stereo displaying system on PC platform. On study of the mechanism of stereo vision, the importance of binocular parallax to generate stereo vision is explained, and different vision effects due to different types of binocular parallax are also analyzed and compared. A binocular-intersected projection model is proposed to generate stereo pairs, and this model is introduced into the opular 3D modeling system 3DS MAX to implement stereo displaying in one of the system windows. By using the LCD shutter glasses, the stereo displaying of static BMP pairs and bi-sequece AVI files generated using the binocular-intersected projection model can be observed. The shift from bi-sequnce AVI to mono-sequence AVI and stereo displaying of mono-sequence AVI are also expatiated. A real time stereo displaying system depending on hardware capabilities of display card is also realized in this paper. Through transforming .3rd files exported by 3DS MAX to .x files 3D models in .x files can be loaded and stereo-displayed by the system. Illumination, textures and material functions are provided, and mutual controls such as pinning and rotation of models are also supplied. Predefined AVI can be played. The advantage of this stereo displaying system to common 3D-display system is that the depth of the image can be felt. A very good stereo vision effect can be obtained; the program's execution is fast. The system is cheap and can be applied in products exhibition, CAI and entertainment.
