Abstract

We developed an MR head for a rotary drum in a helical-scan tape system to realize a high-capacity tape storage unit with a high data transfer rate that uses a small cassette. We also made experimental ME tapes whose magnetic layer is thinner than that of conventional ME tapes and suitable for high-density recording. This paper describes recording/reproduction characteristics with the MR head and the thin-magnetic-layer ME tapes. The result shows that output voltage of the MR head for a rotary drum is 20 times that of an inductive head at a recording wavelength of 0.5 μm. Moreover, the minimum recording wave-length can be shortened to half of that of conventional tape systems at a track width of 6 μm, and an areal recording density of over 1Gbit/inch^2 is feasible at a track width of 3 μm with the combination of the MR head and the thin-magnetic-layer ME tapes whose magnetic layer thickness is 0.09 μm or 0.07 μm.
