Abstract

The authors have proposed a technique for estimating the optimal framerate of a video sequence which maximizes the subjective quality under bitrate constraint. An application of the technique to real-time video transcoding is, however, very restrictive because of its intensive calculation cost. This paper thus reinvestigates the technique to make it possible to estimate the optimal framerate in real time. We first attempt to reduce the number of parameters used to approximate the surface of the spatio-temoral quality of a target video, and approximate the surface by using two parameters, one for the spatial and the other for the temporal directions. We also revise the process of the parameter estimation based on video features to define a new set of ones which can be calculated from the target video with less amount of calculation cost. Finally, we illustrate the validity of the proposed technique by observing the optimal framerate estimated over the variation of the feature values.
