Application of 1000ppm ethrel to debladed petioles of mulberry (Morus alba L. cv. Shin-ichinose) 3 days after deblading stimulated the abscission of the blades more significantly than when the application was made concurrently with deblading. Abscission of the debladed petioles of mulberry (M. alba L. cv. Ichinose) was depressed when a part of the petiole, 1cm in length, was allowed to remain and the cut surfaces were treated with a lanolin paste containing 500ppm auxin (IAA). Incubation of the detached shoot tips of mulberry (M. alba L. cv. Ichinose) in 500ppm ethrel accelerated the defoliation and abscission of the debladed petioles compared with the incubation in 500ppm abscisic acid (ABA). These results suggest that leaf senescence and abscission in mulberry are regulated by the basic auxin-ethylene control system, as demonstrated in other plants.
