Abstract
During the last larval instar of Bombyx mari, the fine structure, nucleic acid and protein synthesis, growth rate and number of mitoses of the wing disc were investigated. Based on the histological observations, the wing cells showed a lower activity, and a small amount of rER was observed in the disc cells at early stages of the fifth instar. The bundles of tracheoles were located near the basement membrane of the wing bud. In the middle and late stages, the disc cells became more active than in the early stages, and the amount of rER increased. The nuclear membrane became irregular, and the microvilli developed. The tracheole migration was observed at day 6, and the evagination and cuticle deposition were seen at day 10. In accordance with these histological observations, RNA and protein synthesis increased in the late stages. The size of the wing disc increased from 2 to 20mm2 during the fifth larval stage. Two peaks of mitoses were observed; one at day 4 and the other at day 9. From these results we concluded that the development of the wing disc during the last larval instar is controlled by JH and ecdysteroid titers in the hemolymph.
