Abstract

The dormancy characteristics of the winter buds of four mulberry varieties, Ichinose, Shinichinose, Minamisakari and Hayatesakari were investigated to determine whether these four varieties could be adapted to cold or warm regions, based on four criteria, i. e. onset of dormancy, period of deepest dormancy, termination of dormancy and period of dormancy.<br>Based on the results obtained, it was considered that the varieties Ichinose and Hayatesakari could be adapted to comparatively cold areas, whereas the varieties Shinichinose and Minamisakari may be adapted to warm areas. Various aspects relating to the delay in the period of deepest dormancy and to two criteria for the evaluation of dormancy characteristics in winter buds were discussed.
