Description

Strength-strain measurement and DSC were carried out in order to analyze the physical properties of Methacryl amide (MAA)-grafted silk fibers, which had been degummed and irradiated with gamma rays (total dose of gamma rays 1.05 Mrad) prior to the MAA graft processing.<br>Strength, elongation, initile tensile resistance and tensile elasticity of MAA-grafted silk fibers were very similar to those of untreated silk fibers. The degree of grafting for MAA-grafted silk was about 40-42% regardless of gamma irradiation treatment, while the denier of grafted silk was about 30% greater than that of untreated silk fiber. Water content and humidity absorption power of the silk fiber markedly increased by the MAA grafting. However, strength and elongation of MAA-grafted silk fiber decreased appeciably compared with the untreated silk fiber. Initial tensile resistance and tensile elasticity of MAA-grafted silk fiber remained unchaged even after MAA grafting. Tensile elasticity of MAA-grafted silk fiber which had been irradiated with gamma rays and successively degummed slightly increased with the other MAA-grafted silk fibers.
