Description

Mechanical properties of silk fibers in a standard state (20°C, 65% RH) and in a wet state obtained by preirradiation grafting of Methacryl amide (MAA) were investigated and analysed on the basis of the results of strength and elongation measurements.<br>Values for strength and elongation of the ungrafted silk fibers in the standard state were 4.3-4.6g/d, 20.9-22.5%, respectively. These values for the MMA grafted silk fibers obtained by preirradiation grafting decreased to 3.1-3.2g/d, 18.2-19.4%, respectively, compared with those for the fibers in the standard state. Initial tensile resistance of the MAA grafted fibers in a wet state decreased to one-third of the value for the original silk fibers, suggesting that the silk fibers become soft and longer in the wet state due to MAA grafting. MAA grafted silk fibers obtained by preirradiation and by successive degumming gave high value for tensile elasticity. These results indicate that it is possible to enhance the crease proofing properties of silk fabrics.
