説明

The mechanical properties of grafted silk fibers containing more than 55% methacryl amide (MAA) polymer were studied by measuring the stress-strain. Thermal behavior of the MAA residues which were obtained after the removal of a large amount of silk fibroin was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. The size of the silk fibers increased with the increase in the graft percentage of MAA. The size of the silk fibers increased abruptly when the silk fibers contained more then 55% of the MAA polymer. There was a marked tendency for the increase in the size of the silk fibers to saturation when the percentage of grafting exceeded 70%. The MAA-grafted silk fibers showed a slightly extension at the breaking point compared with ungrafted silk fibers. However, the strength at the breaking point of the MAA grafted silk fibers was less than half that of the ungrafted fibers. DSC curves obtained from MAA-grafted silk fibers (110% degree of grafting) showed double peaks at about 289°C (A peak) and 331°C (B peak), attributed to the thermal decomposition of the MAA polymer and silk fibroin, respectively. The temperature of the A and B peak shifted to a lower value which decreased after silk fibroin was removed from the MAA-grafted silk fibers. On the other hand, the temperature of the A peak shifted to a higher value prior to that of the B peak as the grafting reaction proceeded.
