Ribosomes were extracted from Bombyx eggs which were in diapause or activated from diapause either by chilling or HCl treatment. The ribosomes obtained were characterized by their dissociability into subunits in high ionic strength. The present results show that about 80% of ribosomes from diapause eggs were salt-labile, while about 40% of ribosomes from activated eggs were salt-stable. Moreover, the activated eggs incorporated 3H-leucine in vivo more actively into acid insoluble fractions compared to diapause eggs. These findings indicate that diapause eggs contain a large pool of resting ribosomes, and the functional ribosomes increase after the break of diapause.
