説明

The composition of the mineral constituents, amino acids and organic acids was analysed in two types of abnormalities of mulberry leaves which were observed at Kugiono, Usuki City, Ooita Pref., one consisting of chlorotic petioles and midribs and the other characterized by interveinal or marginal necrosis. Some elements were detected in X-ray distribution images obtained by X-ray microprobe analysis.
One of the characteristic features in the necrotic leaves was the remarkable increase of the phosphorus and nitrogen contents. The increase of total nitrogen was also associated with a pronounced increase of arginine, asparagine and aspartic acid content as well as of nitrate nitrogen.
In leaves showing lesions, phosphorus and calcium were detected as large deposits in X-ray distribution images of the elements in the upper epidermis. In contrast, all the elements detected in the upper epidermis of healthy leaves wer uniformly distributed except for silica which was concentrated at the surface of idioblast. Both deposits were scattered with a distinct localization, although the deposits of phosphorus were clearly observed than those of calcium in the necrotic leaves. Calcium deposits were clearly seen in the chlorotic leaves. These findings suggested that the large amount of phosphorus accumulated was precipitated in an inactive form as calcium phosphate.
The remarkable increase of oxalic acid in the necrotic leaves was also characteristic.
The above-mentioned results suggest that the metabolic pattern in the necrotic leaves was different from that in the chlorotic ones and the cause of occurrence of the lesions also different.
