Abstract

Finishing of polyethyleneglycol di (meta) acrylate having two (meta) acrylic acid ester groups in a molecule was carried out in silk fabrics. Results obtained were as follows;
The addition of about 9 mole units of ethyleneglycol in a molecule of dimetacrylate (PEGDMA-9) was most suitable for the finishing of silk fabrics, judging from the homogeneous reaction and adequate degree of polymerization. In spite of the lower weight increase offer polymerization, wet crease resistance of silk fabrics finished by PEGDMA-9 increased by about 10% compared with the value for unfinished silk fabrics, without causing any damage to the superior characteristics of the silk fibers.
The most suitable conditions for PEGDMA-9 polymerization, including infrared absorption spectrum for finishing silk fabrics, polymerization degree of PEGDMA-9 and effect on colour fastness of silk fabrics dyed with black colour dyestuffs, etc. were investigated to establish criteria for PEGDMA-9 finishing in silk fabrics.
