Description
Structural characteristics of HEMA polymer and HEMA-grafted silk were studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).<br>Keton type carbonyl radicals were formed in associating with the dehydration of the intermolecular side chains of HEMA polymer, when the temperature exceeded 200°C. Melting was accompanied bythe degradation of the molecular chains of HEMA polymer at about 314°C. The temperature of thermal decomposition of the HEMA-grafted silk shifted to higher values with the increase in the graft percentage of HEMA polymer. The decomposition temperature of HEMA-grafted silk containing more than 90% HEMA polymer reached 340°C. The enthalpic change of the endothermic peak which appeared at 410°C on the DSC curves of HEAM-grafted silk remained unchanged even after the increase in the graft percentage of HEAM polymer.<br>Crystalline structure and adsorptive behavior of the HEMA-grafted silk remained unchanged even after HEMA grafting. Scaning electron micrographs of the HEMA-grafted silk containing more than 90% HEMA polymer showed granular forms on the surface of the HEMA-grafted silk.
