It is conceived that storage forms of the carbohydrates change according to the developmental stages of the eggs. To see the metabolic correlations between the reserved and intermediatory forms, sugars were analysed quantitatively by a gas chromatography during the embryonic development of silkworms.<br>Glucose, fructose, inositol and ribose as well as trehalose were clearly found in the eggs and showed a different changing pattern during the embryonic development each other. In both non-diapause and diapause types of eggs glucose became to be higher on the later stages when trehalose disappeared and inositol content rose gradually in the course of embryonic development. While fructose clearly increased at the early phase just after the termination of diapause when sorbitol was utilized abruptly. A low but significant level of ribose was observed throughout the embryonic life.<br>From these results the intermediatory metabolism of carbohydrates was discussed with regard to embryonic development of silkworms.
