Chinese tusser silk and eri silk were dyed with three vegetable dyes which differed in the color series by using four kinds of mordant, and the surface color of these dyed samples was examined in comparing them with mulberry silk.
The color of the samples dyed with the LOGWOOD dye changed depending on the types of silk and was different in degummed or undegummed samples. In particular in undegummed samples for which aluminum or tin salt was used as mordant, large differences in the Hue value were observed between wild silk and mulberry silk.
There was no appreciable difference of hue in the samples dyed with the SUO dye among the three samples for which the same mordant was used, but the degree of red of wild silk (particularly Chinese tusser silk) decreased markedly compared with that of mulberry silk. The hue of samples for which chrome had been used as mordant indicated the increase of the degree of purple, which is remarkable in the case of wild silk.
The chroma of wild silks dyed with the SHIBUKI (A) dye was generally lower than that of mulberry silk. There were large differences in the lightness of the dyed samples, and the color of the samples was largely influenced by the differences in lightness.
