The changes in DNA, RNA and protein contents of the wing disc of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, were studied, and the histological change in the wing disc was observed from the beginning of the fifth larval instar to adult eclosion. DNA, RNA and protein contents increased rapidly, during the spinning stage and between the third and seventh days of the pupal stage, but did not increase during the first two days after pupation. The wing cells differentiated in an early pupal stage, and subsequently the wing scales were formed. Injection of mitomycine C into the body cavity during the first two days after pupation resulted in the induction of the undeveloped scales or the deformed wings.
