The results of the above experiments are summarized as follows:
(1) The chromosome number of M. nigra from Java used in this experiment is 2n=28 at the mitotic metaphase, that is, this species is diploid, because the basic number of chromosomes in the haploid of Morus plants is 14.
(2) Two long chromosomes are observed among those 28 chromosomes and others are gradually decreased in length, showing some variants, that is, in an example the former long chromosome pair showed about 1, 9μm in length and the others measured from about 1.1μm to 0.8μm in length at the mitotic metapase, however, their length is changeable according to the squash method, especially to the fixing and macerating treatments.
(3) Almost all chromosomes of this species seem to have a primary constriction, except some small ones, and the almost all constrictions are located on the metacentric position of chromosomes at the mitotic metaphase, but some ones are located on the submetacentric position. Therefore, the former ones are matacentric chromosomes and the latter ones are submetacentric chromosomes.
(4) The hybridization between M. nigra from Java and the diploid mulberry species such as M. alba or M. acidosa, succeeded in making many offsprings.
(5) From the above experiments, it is safe to say that those hybrid plants are available for improving the tropical mulberry trees.
