When mulberry trees were exposed to hydrogen fluoride in a gas-exposing apparatus, a change into brown color started from the edge and periphery of leaves corresponding to the concentration of gas, and as the damage was progressed, the damage was extended to the whole surface of leaves, causing the crispation followed by the falling-off of leaves eventually. The damage was larger in younger leaves except at the egde and smaller in mature leaves.
The symptoms of damage appeared in about 12hr after the exposure to 30ppb of gas and in about 1.5hr after the exposure to 200ppb. The symptoms appeared when the product of gas concentration and exposure time reached about 300-360.
The amount of intake of fluorine in the leaves at the time point of appearance of the damage was about 107ppm per dry weight in case of 30ppb of gas concentration and about 98ppm in case of 200ppb, and the difference due to gas concentration was small.
When silkworm larvae were fed exposed leaves whose fluorine intake exceeded 15ppm per dried matter (30ppm in the total amount added 15ppm of fluorine originally contained in the leaves), bad effects appeared in the growth, health degree, and cocoon quality. The larvae showed symptoms such as inelasticity of skin, softening of body, black speaks on the intersegmental membrane, etc. and died eventually.
