The growth period throughout a year in 7 years old mulberry trees grown in the field was divided into 4 stages; regrowth stage after summer pruning, assimilation and accumulation stage, accumulation stage after leaf-falling and developing stage of new shoots in spring. The fluctuations of the carbohydrate content in each organ of tree in each stage were studied and the following results were obtained; in the developing stage of new shoots in spring or after summer pruning carbohydrate reserves in tree were consumed and the sugar content continued to decrease, especially in the under-ground parts. It was assumed that the growth depending on the consumption of reserve carbohydrates lasts for at least 40 days after sprouting in spring. During the carbohydrate consumption for new shoot development, carbohydrates are spontaneously assimilated and accumulated in the form of starch, mainly in the above-ground parts. Starch which accumulates considerable amount in the aboveground parts is transformed to sugar in winter and presumably contributes to the increase of the cold resistance of the shoots.
