抄録

This experiment was carried out for the purpose of clarifying the relationship between the amount of food ingested and number or weight of feces in larvae of the silkworm. Both hybrids of C-124×J-124 and C-131×J-131 were used as materials and the tests were carried out in the stage from the 3rd to the 5th larval instar. The data taken were analyzed by the statistical method.<br>The results obtained are summarized as follows:<br>1. It was found that the relationships between the amount of food, ingested number of feces and its weight were definitely different according to the instar, that is the relationship was homogeneous in the 3rd and the 4th instars, differing from that in the 5th instar.<br>2. In the time-course of change in number and weight of feces, it was observed that the rate of increase was higher in weight than in number and was remarkably higher in the 3rd and 4th instars than in the 5th instar.<br>3. Accordingly, it should be concluded that although the estimating method of the chronological change in the amount of food ingested by counting number of feces may be appropriate in the 5th instar, it is inappropriate slightly in the 3rd and the 4rh instats because of estimating value become smaller one than the true value as the development in these instars.
