説明

Some fluorine compounds have been detected in both the favorable and unfavorable leaves from mulberry trees around the tile factories. This paper described about the relative toxicity for the silkworm larvae of some fluorides and fluosilicates added to the mulberry leaves.
When the relative toxicity of 14 compounds tested are evaluated as median lethal concentration and as the prolongation of growth period, AlF3, CaF2 and MgF2 are almost non-toxic, but other fluorine compounds are toxic. Median lethal concentrations of BaF2 and (NH4)2SiF6 are lower than 10ppm; KF, K2SiF6, NaF, Na2SiF6 and NH4F are <15ppm; Al2(SiF6)3, BaSiF6, CaSiF6 and MgSiF6 are <30ppm. The effect of prolongatiog growth period correlated closely with the lethal action.
It seems that the toxicity of leaves from mulberry trees around the tile factories did not depend on total amount of fluorine itself, but on the kind and quantity of fluorine compounds.
It is proposed a method to judge the toxicity of mulberry leaves by rearing the silkworm for one or two larval instars. If prolongation of growth period was observed, the leaves are judged as an unfavorable one, even though there is no lethal silkworm larvae.
