The adsorption isotherms of ungrafted and styrene grafted silk fibers for water were determined under various humilities at 25°C. Cluster theory has been applied to gain insight into the relationship of water molecules adsorbed onto fibers.
1. The adsorption isotherms of the fibers for water have a characteristic sigmoidal shape. The amounts of water adsorbed decreased with increasing the grafting percentage of the silk fiber.
2. The water molecules adsorbed have a more marked tendency of clustering in the grafted fibers than those in the ungrafted fiber.
3. The average cluster size of adsorbed water in the grafted fibers was larger than that in the ungrafted fiber at the same volume fraction of water. However, as the ungrafted fiber adsorbed more water than the grafted fiber, the cluster size increased after the grafted fiber was saturated, and reached the value of 1.75 which was larger than that in the grafted fibers.
4. In the case of the ungrafted fiber, a significant contribution to the partial pressure was observed only when adsorbed water molecules happened to be located in the neighborhood. However, in the case of the grafted fibers, water molecules made considerable contribution to the partial pressure irrespective whether they were isolated or in contact.
