The apparent molal volumes of aspartic acid, glutamic acid and asparagine are measured and the electrostrictions of the solvent due to the charged carboxyl-and amino-groups are calculated.
Electrostrictions due to the α-carboxyl-and amino-groups of aspartic acid and glutamic acid are smaller than those of monoamino monocarboxylic acid which were previously reported. On the other hand the result for asparagine is in satisfactory agreement with other α-amino acids. The electrostrictive effect of β-carboxyl group of aspartic acid is less than that of γ-carboxyl. group of glutamic acid.
These data indicate that, the electrostriction due to the charged groups is remarkably affected by the neighboring charged groups. For the further interpretation of these findings the rela-tion between the electrostriction due to the carboxyl group of some carboxylic acids and their molecular structure is discussed.
