Abstract
Phytotoxicity of sulfur-containing derivatives (I_??_XXXV) of phenols and α, β-unsaturated ketones was examined by foliar application to cucumber, mung bean, Japanese barnyard millet and Komatsuna.
1) The derivatives (I_??_XVII) of phenols:
5-Methylthio-8-hydroxyquinoline (XV) and 5-methylthio-7-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline (XVI) exhibited phytotoxicity on cucumber and komatsuna. 2-Methylthio-4-methyl-6-nitrophenol(XIV) revealed weakly activity on komatsuna. 4-Methylthio-2-nitrophenol(XI) and 4-methylthio-6-methyl-2-nitrophenol (XII) showed the greatest effect on four kinds of the plants tested.
2) The derivatives (XVIII_??_XXXV) of α, β-unsaturated ketones:
2'-Methylthio-5'-methyl-4-chlorochalcone (XIX) and 2'-methylthio-5'-chlorochalcone (XXIII) were effective on komatsuna, and 2'-methylthio-5'-methyl-4-sulfonylamidochalcone (XXII) affected on Japanese barnyard millet. Thioaurones (XXVIII_??_XXXV) also showed weak activity on the plant.
