Phytotoxicity of hydroxyaryldimethylsulfonium perchlorate (I_??_IX) and hydroxyaryl methyl sulfide (X_??_XVII) was examined by the application to soil after sowing the seeds of cucumber, mung bean, Japanese barnyard millet and komatsuna.<br> All sulfonium perchlorates (I_??_IX) selectively exhibited phytotoxicity on Japanese barnyard millet. Of these sulfonium compounds (I_??_IX), 2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyldimethylsulfonium perchlorate (IV) and 4-hydroxynaphthyldimethylsulfonium perchlorate (IX) showed strong activity. These results indicate that the introduction of dimethylsulfonium perchlorate group to phenols is of use to develop the herbicide for weeds belonging to gramineae.<br> 4-Methylthio-2-nitrophenol (XI) and 4-methylthio-6-methyl-2-nitrophenol (XII) showed the greatest effect on four kinds of the plants tested, as did in the case of the folliar application. Both XI and XII showed phytotoxicity similar to PCP-Na. However, the activity of XII was stronger than that of XI.
