Abstract

The demand for handrails that can be easily installed as barrier-free equipment has increased with development of a super-aging society. In this paper, we report a method for quantitative evaluation of the difficulty of standing up from a toilet with a handrail grip. Kinetic loads(force, torque, and grip strength)acting on the handrail during the action of standing up, the center of pressure(COP)of the floor reaction force, and the results of sensory evaluation in this experiment are used as evaluation items. For each participant, the distance from the heel to the toilet seat increases when a handrail is used, and an increasing trend is observed in other parameters as well. In particular, a significant difference in tensile force is observed toward the front of the handrail. In contrast, no significant difference in grip strength is observed in either case. These results suggest the superiority of quantitative evaluation based on the maximum value in data for the tensile force applied to the front of the handrail and evaluation based on impulse using the same data.
