Recently, plastic pipe and synthetic fiber filter are being widely used, instead of drain tile, for underdrainage in Japan. However, there are several problem regarding these pipe and filter such as the necessity of filter, the blinding of such filter, shape of slit (impedance of fluid passage through the filter and slit) and the relation between the slit type and strength of pipe. This paper concerns the above problems and the following results were obtained.<BR>From the view point of hydraulics, filter for drain pipe is necessary if there is not a clearance between the soil layer and pipe. If a filter is not used in such a case, the quantity of drain discharge would not exceed more the 35% as compared with the highly pervious filter.<BR>When the underdrain was installed in muddy water, the passage of fluid through the synthetic fiber filter was seriously impeded. According to laboratory test, the drainage discharge did not exceed more than 1. 3 mm/ day when the drain was installed at interoak of 20m at a depth of 1.0m.<BR>In Dainaka reclaimed land, the plastic pipe for underdrain was dug up 3 years after it has been installed and the filter and slit were examined. It was found that the impedance of fluid passage was very serious. At the Hachirogata reclaimed land, blinding by iroroxide was observed. As similar phenomena have been observed in foreign countries, various measures for these are being investigated.<BR>The relation between slit and round hole of drain pipe and pipe strength was also studied. The result shows that the round hole type is much better than the slit type. Therefore, judging from the above result, the relatively large hole type is more effective for elimination of the blinding phenomena.
