This paper reports on a new method for determining the required pipe drainage discharge for multipurpose paddies. The design of pipe drainage aims at removing the detained water of volume V (mm) in a field within the required duration (T=1 day) after surface water is drained through the spillway to the farm drain. The required drainage discharge (D mm/d) is, therefore, defined as the initial and maximal discharge to enable to drain the volume V of water within the duration T. The required drainage discharge is determined by the following procedure. A hydrograph observed at a representative field in which a discharge at the initial stage is qo and volume V of water is drained in some duration (t) is converted to the hydrograph in which the initial discharge is D and the same volume V of water is drained within the duration of T. For this conversion, the relation of V, T and D is deduced through the hydrograph analysis. The volume of V is obtained by integrating the ovserved hydrograph.<BR>This procedure was applied to hydrographs observed at a number of fields and the values of D were determined for each field.<BR>The following results were obtained.<BR>(1) By equation D=3 V/T, determination is made of the required drainage discharge, where T is 1 day and V is obtained from the observed hydrographs.<BR>(2) As the value of D in case there are no data on V, 20 mm/d is roughly estimated for paddies having ordinary drainage conditions and 40 mm/d is estimated for the use of non-rice crops.
