The main factors which concern soil albedo diurnal variations are 1) the physical and chemical properties of soil (soil color and soil moisture content), 2) the geometrical features of the soil surface and 3) variations in the ratio of the direct and diffuse radiation components.
Painted-glass beads, uniform in diameter, were adopted as a substitute for soil particles in this work, so that the characteristics 1) and 2) above could be defind and quantified, allowing for the examination of the characteristics of 3) above.
First, the form factor (or view factor): sunny and shaded areas as well as shadows on the beads surface, discriminated by eye above the beads, can be calculated quantitatively.
Next, the beads albedo AD calculated on the basis of direct radiation and the albedo As the diffuse radiation component are estimated by the form factor. The main results are summarized as follows: the composite evaluation mixed with A (measured albedo) and AD & AS (estimated albedo) of the beads and their distinctive reflection features overlap those of soil reflection. The ratio AD/AS of the white and grey beads can be shown to increase with the decrease in solar height and this tendency coincides with the one for vegetation. But the effect of the secondary reflection must be introduced for such a large reflective surface as white color beads.
