Abstract

Gas diffusivity, permeability and air-filled porosity were measured in undisturbed clayey soil samples of upland fields converted paddies. Soybean, barley and cabbage were cultivated in the fields. The results were as follows:
1. The linear correlation between relative diffusivity and permeability in plow layer soils at-3.1kPa (1.5pF) matric potential was statistically significant.
2. The actual phenomenon was estimated using the equation for the relation between gas diffusivity and airfilled porosity based on Fick's law. The equation for the relation between permeability and air-filled porosity was based on both the Hagen-Poiseuille law and Darcy's law using a simple capillary model. The relation between gas diffusivity and air-filled porosity, as well as the relation between permeability and air-filled porosity, were also given in the form of a linear equation using a simple capillary model.
3. The characteristics of permeability and diffusivity through macropores of clayey soils for several fields conditions were discussed with the radius of capillary, the tortuosity of capillary and the volume of pores which did not contribute significantly to diffusivity and permeability.
