  • On the Sediment Environment in Lake Koyama in Summer from the Viewpoint of Concentrations of Heavy Metals and sulfide in Mud

抄録

Lake Koyama, located in the northeast part of Tottori prefecture, has environmental problems such as anomalous proliferation of phytoplankton and creation of oxygen deficient water near the lake bottom. In addition, the bottom mud is widely spread, and it is predicted that hydrogen sulfide, which is a toxic material for benthos, and heavy metals, which are a pollution source, have accumulated in the sediments. Such an accumulation becomes a problem in the water and sediment environment. In this study, the concentration distributions of sulfide and the heavy metals, Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the bottom mud were measured in the summer of 2001, and the characteristics of their spatial distributions were examined. The concentration distributions of heavy metals were analogous in that the concentration was higher in the western part and lower in the north-eastern part. Sulfide concentrations in the sediments of Lake Koyama were sufficiently low from the viewpoint of the sulfide tolerance of Corbicula japonica. As a result of a comprehensive evaluation of the sediment environment using principle component analysis and cluster analysis, Lake Koyama can be divided into five categories.
