Description

Janbu method, in case of noncircular slides, is generally respected that the error to strict solution is small. However, several problems are pointed out. The problems are followings. It seems difficult to treat the method that we can not have a clear grasp of the solution, which is smaller or bigger than the strict solution. Is not it unsuitable for land slides those having a steep failure surface, and it is impossible to define the only coefficient of correction in simplified Janbu method. Then we tried to clear these points by investigate internal examples of noncircular slide and models of rock-mass landslides. As a result, we found out following facts. The frequency that solution of Janbu method become bigger than strict solution by more than 1% is as sameas Fellenius method which calculate smaller solution than strict solution. The frequency of the error calculated by Janbu method will be less than 1% is double, more than 10% is one third of Fellenius method. Also we confirmed the requirement that the solution of Janbu method does not to converge and the definition of the coefficient of correction. From the results stated above, it was reconfirmed that as to noncircular slide include rock-mass landslides, Janbu method is predominant to Fellenius method and has enough applicability.
